F1 Canada Starting Grid

Canadian Grand Prix starting grid revealed: Russell on pole, Verstappen and Leclerc penalized

Russell secures first pole position of 2023 season

George Russell has claimed his first pole position of the 2023 Formula 1 season after a dramatic qualifying session at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver will start ahead of reigning world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who will be starting second despite a three-place grid penalty for impeding other drivers.

Other penalties and grid changes

Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez will start third, followed by Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Lando Norris of McLaren. Sainz, Tsunoda, and Stroll were each penalized three grid places for impeding other drivers, while Tsunoda and Leclerc were required to start from the back of the grid for using an additional power unit element.

Russell leads competitive midfield

Russell's pole position is a significant result for Mercedes, who have struggled to match the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari in the early part of the season. The British driver will be hoping to convert his pole into a race victory and close the gap in the championship standings.

Verstappen still favorite for race win

Despite starting second, Verstappen remains the favorite for the race win. The Dutchman has been in dominant form this season, winning three of the first six races. Russell will need a perfect race to challenge Verstappen, who will be looking to extend his lead in the championship.

Race details

The Canadian Grand Prix will be held on Sunday, June 18, at 2pm local time (-4 GMT) at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The race will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports Main.
